The Lot, as TrojanHospitality calls the area that will replace food options that were lost with the demolition of Commons, is an 18,000-square-foot tent. Construction began Feb. 21, and Scott Shuttleworth, director of TrojanHospitality, said his office expects to open about one week before move-in day Aug. 20.
"Our goal is to be on track and get it open just before move-in to give the staff a chance to iron out the operational execution," Shuttleworth said.
The Lot will have eight dining eateries, a marketplace similar to the one in Commons, six television monitors and both a USC Credit Union and Bank of America ATM machines. The facility will also have wireless Internet and areas for students to charge their computers.
While not all of the dining concepts have been finalized, students can expect to see the return of Wolfgang Puck, Carl's Jr. and Traditions. New additions to The Lot will include Zao Noodle Bar, Baja Fresh and San Diego-based sub shop Submarina. There will also be a frozen yogurt vendor and a coffee vendor which will also sell pastries.
"The Lot has a greater ability [than Commons] to be a social gathering spot," Shuttleworth said.
While the hours of operation have not been announced for The Lot, Shuttleworth said he will expand them based on student usage. He also sees the space as a convenient way to watch football games on weekends, so he is considering weekend hours.

Please, no more franchised or boring corporate restaurants! I hope there are more AUTHENTIC ethnic food choices, and not just "Mc Donaldized Chinese food" joints like Panda Express. (Continued…)
